2023 IOF INTERNATIONAL ORTHODONTIC SYMPOSIUM

The 2023 IOF International Orthodontic Symposium was held from June 16th to 18th, 2023 in Hong Kong, China.

In 2022, IOF successfully kicked off the first International Symposium, with more than 160,000 views online. Coming to its second year, 2023 IOF International Orthodontic Symposium titled "Advances in Clinical Orthodontics: Steering into the future", covered a wide range of topics, including translational research, development and application of new appliances and technologies, and key aspects of modern orthodontics practices under increasing patient needs. 32 elite orthodontic experts from China and across the world gathered in Hong Kong to discuss the future of orthodontics.

Dr. Kang Ting currently is an adjunct faculty at the ADA Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, MA, USA.

 Dr. Eric Kang Ting graduated from Harvard school of Dental Medicine with high honor and the gold award with DMD in 1991 and PhD, and an orthodontic certificate from Harvard in 1994. He currently is an adjunct faculty at the ADA Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, MA, USA. He was formerly the Academic Senate Tenured Professor since 2002 and founding chair in the Division of Growth and Development at UCLA. The Division comprises the Sections of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. Besides his teaching and clinical responsibilities in Orthodontics. Dr. Ting has google scholar h-index of 62 – as one of the top three highest orthodontists globally. Ting’s original research has received well over 12,000 citations. It has been published in many leading journals, including Nature Communications, Journal of Clinical Investigation, PLOS One, and Biomaterials, etc as the principal author. Dr. Ting has been served as a PARC AAOF committee member since 2015. In 2018, Professor Ting and his team received the International Space Station (ISS) Innovation Award for Biology and Medicine for Development of NELL-1 Bone-Growth Systemic Therapy by the American Astronautical Society. Dr. Ting has received over US 30M in funding from the US government as a key investigator in his career.  Stemmed from his research, two novel biologic drugs are currently in FDA clinical trials for scar reduction, and bone regeneration respectively.

Dr. Ravindra Nanda is part of the founding faculty of the School of Dental Medicine and has been associated with the University of Connecticut since 1972 where he also holds the title of professor emeritus in the Orthodontics Division.

 He is also an adjunct faculty at the ADA Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, USA. He is an innovator of various appliances in orthodontics. His research and clinical interests include adolescent and adult orthodontics, the biology of tooth mobility, craniofacial orthopedics, biomechanics and developing efficient mechanics to deliver orthodontic care.

Dr. Ko has been associated with academic bioengineering and clinical orthodontics in various capacities over the last 30 years.

 He is presently the Professor and Vig/William Endowed Chair of the Division of Orthodontics, Ohio State University College of Dentistry in Columbus, OH. He received his dental training first at Kaohsiung Medical College, and then PhD in Bioengineering at University of Michigan and then Orthodontic Specialty from University of Minnesota. He was an Assistant Professor of Oral Biology at Minnesota Dental Research Center for Biomechanics and Biomaterials at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis US, from 1994 to 2006, and Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC) from 2006 to 2020. Before leaving UNC, he served as Program Director (2013-2019) and Chairman (2017-2020) at UNC. Many of his students received awards from American Association of Orthodontists Foundation under his direct mentorship. Dr. Ko has contributed more than 170 publications to the scientific literature in biomaterial/biomechanical sciences, orthodontics, and bone biology. He has co-authored more than 10 book chapters and recently co-edited the book entitled “Machine Learning in Dentistry”. His research in bone tissue engineering and orthodontic bioengineering was funded by NIH. He maintains a faculty clinical practice at OSU.

Dr Chung H. Kau is Professor and Chair at the Department of Orthodontics, University of Alabama at Birmingham.
 He also holds academic appointments as Senior Scientist at the Global Center for Craniofacial, Oral and Dental Disorders and UAB Microbiome Center. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics(US), Specialist Orthodontist on the Singapore Dental Council and the General Dental Council (United Kingdom). He serves as the Director of the Craniofacial Orthodontia Clinic in partnership with the Children’s Rehabilitation Service and Medicaid of Alabama and is the craniofacial orthodontist on the Cleft Craniofacial Team at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. He enjoys practicing clinical orthodontics has a special interest in craniofacial anomalies and dento-facial deformities. He is also a researcher with a keen interest in clinical translational research focusing on technology driven orthodontic applications, dent-facial deformities, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, accelerated tooth movement and 4D jaw tracking. At present, he is Principal Investigator on several NIH and Industry grants and has a research involvement in excess of US$4+ million dollars. He actively contributes and publishes in the orthodontic literature and has over 450 peer-reviewed publications, conference papers and lectures. He has over 175 invited presentations and lectures in over 50 countries. In 2011, he was awarded the King James IV Professor by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh where he also served as the International Advisor for the USA and examiner for the MFDS and MOrth examinations. He has also been featured on CBS Nightly News, WBRC (Alabama) and ABC33 (Alabama) on various Orthodontic topics.

Dr Aurélie Majourau-Bouriez, has completed her dental degree (D.D.S.) at the University of Paris VII 

in France in 1989, and her orthodontic training (Certificate in Orthodontics, Master of Dental 

Sciences) at the University of Connecticut in the USA from 1990 to 1993 while Pr Charles Burstone 

and Pr Ravi Nanda chaired the Orthodontic Dept. After her graduation, she came back to France to 

open her orthodontic office and join the Orthodontic Department of Paris VII Garancière University as a part time visiting clinical faculty for five years before becoming the referent orthodontic consultant of the multidisciplinary team for cleft lip and palate (CLP) at the St Vincent de Paul Children Hospitalin Paris for 16 years. Then, she joined the Maxillo-Facial and Plastic Surgery Department at Necker Children University Hospital in Paris (National Center of Reference for cranio-facial and oral 

anomalies, AP-HP, MAFACE, Paris, France) which is one of the largest cranio-facial anomaliesCenter in Europe. Dr Majourau-Bouriez has been working for the team for the past 12 years as a 

clinical orthodontic referent faculty. She is also affiliated to the Clinic Marcel Sembat (Ramsay group) in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, for both multi-disciplinary teams for cranio-facial anomalies and for pediatric sleep apnea.

Dr Majourau-Bouriez has also been working since 1993 in her private orthodontic clinic located in 

Boulogne Billancourt (Paris suburb), being focused on complex cases treatment (including cleft lip 

and palate patients, and OSA). She performs clinical research on CLP patients and pediatric sleep 

apnea both at her office and at the Hospital. She also teaches Orthodontics at the University of 

Strasbourg for the CLP PostDoctoral University diploma.

She is the President of the American Dental Club of Paris (ADCP) and an active member of the North Atlantic Component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. Dr Majourau-Bouriez is alsoan active member of the French Society of Dento-Facial Orthopedics (SFODF), the AAO, the American Cleft Palate-CranioFacial Association and the Association Francophone des Fentes Faciales (AFFF). 

Aurelie serves on the scientific board of the French Federation of Orthodontists (FFO) as the coPresident of the CLP committee. She also serves on the editorial board of « L’Orthodontie Française » 

journal and reviews CLP papers for peer reviewed journals such as the Angle Orthodontist Journal. 

Aurelie is author and co-author of research papers and books related to CLP treatments and has

Dr. Tingxi Wu is currently an Assistant Faculty member at The ADA Forsyth Institute, serving as the Director of Orthodontic and Craniofacial Development Research. Dr. Wu obtained her DDS degree from West China School of Stomatology, Sichuan University. Following her DDS training, she acquired her PhD degree and orthodontic specialty training at University of California, Los Angeles.
Dr. Wu’s clinical expertise includes craniofacial growth-modification, multidisciplinary craniofacial deformity treatment, management of complications in orthodontic treatment. Dr. Wu is also actively involved in translational and clinic studies, including development of preventive and therapeutic tools against craniofacial deformity and orthodontic-related oral infectious diseases. The novel technologies developed by Dr. Wu were licensed by several dental companies. In addition, Dr. Wu’s basic research has been focused on using multidisciplinary approaches to study oral microbial pathogenesis with a specific focus on microbial biofilm, inter-species interaction and signal transduction. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and presented her research at national and international conferences. Dr. Wu has received awards and funding from American Association of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists Foundation, and National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Chenshuang Li

Dr. Chenshuang Li is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Director in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She finished dental school training at the Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2011, completed her Ph.D. training in Orthodontics at the School and Hospital of Stomatology at Peking University in collaboration with the UCLA Dental and Craniofacial Research Institute in 2016, finished her orthodontic specialty training at UCLA School of Dentistry in 2019, and obtained DMD from University of Pennsylvania in 2022. Dr. Li’s researches primary focus on the functional investigation of molecules involved in craniofacial tissue development and regeneration, as well as 3D imaging analysis. Dr. Li has co-authored more than seventy manuscripts published in top peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Clinical Investigation, Biomaterials, The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Stem Cells, and The Journal of Dental Research. During the past 5 years, Dr. Li was awarded the 2018 AAO First place winner of the Charley Schultz Resident Scholar Award, the 2019 AAO Thomas M. Graber Award of Special Merit, 2021 ORS/ON Foundation Orthoregeneration Award, 2021 IADR Innovation Award for Excellence in Orthodontics Research, 2021 AAOF Orhan C. Tuncay Teaching Fellowship Award, 2021 AAO Full-time Faculty Fellowship Award, 2023 ADEA Leadership Institute Phase V Leadership Development Tuition Scholarship, 2023 AAOF James L. Vaden Teaching Fellowship Award, and 2023 AAPF the Dr. Colin Richman and Family Perio.-Ortho. Interface Award. Dr. Li currently serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the IADR Craniofacial Biology Group and the Secretary of the ADEA Section on Orthodontics.

Chris Bentson is a partner of Bentson Copple & Associates, LLC based in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The company serves the orthodontic community by performing practice valuations, providing recruiting services, and negotiating transactions with both buyers and sellers. Chris has been working with orthodontists regarding the business aspects of their practices for over thirty years, and was recently awarded the "Outstanding Contribution to the Specialty Award by a Non-Orthodontist" from the AAO.

He spends much of his time working within the orthodontic industry. He currently serves as President of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF). In addition, he is a frequent guest lecturer at AAO meetings, regional orthodontic society meetings, orthodontic resident programs, study clubs, and orthodontic user meetings. Chris has authored dozens of articles published on the business of orthodontics in numerous orthodontic trade publications. Chris has personally visited over one thousand orthodontic practices in the United States, Canada, and Australia during his career. He enjoyed excellent relationships with consultants and vendors within the orthodontic community.

 Dr. Fang is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fellow of Orthodontics International Examiner, Vice Chairman of Oral Aesthetics Society of Chinese Stomatological Association, Vice President of Oral Plastic and Cosmetic Branch of China Plastic and Cosmetic Association and Chairman of the Orthodontic Society of Shanghai Stomatological Association.

Dr. Yuxing Bai is the Vice-President of Chinese Stomatological Association and President of the Stomatological Computer (Digital) Society.
He is also the Immediate Past President of the Orthodontic Society, president of  Beijing Stomatological Association. He also holds the title of Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Stomatology, Chinese Journal of Orthodontics, and Editor-in-Chief of Beijing Journal of Stomatology and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Restoration. Dr. Bai is a State-Council allowance obtained expert. He was awarded the young and middle-aged experts who have made outstanding contributions by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the National Health Commission and Beijing.

Dr. Ben Wu

Prof. Ben Wu is Chief Science Officer at the ADA Forsyth Institute. He received his Advanced Prosthodontics training from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he published the first papers on three dimensional printing for tissue engineering scaffolds and drug delivery devices.

He was recruited to UCLA where he rose the ranks to simutaneous chairmanship in two top schools (Bioengineering in the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, and Advanced Prosthodontics in UCLA School of Dentistry).  He was also Director of the UCLA Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, and Professor in the Department of Materials Science and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UCLA. His research focused on the understanding of biomaterials-tissue interactions, and advanced manufacturing of novel materials at scale.  His research program has produced over 250 peer-reviewed articles, >30 patents, and >22,000 citations. He has been continuously funded by the NIH and NSF for over 20 years and three of his start-ups have FDA clearance.  He serves on numerous advisory boards for government, academia,  industry, and non-profit, and is an active clinical prosthodontist.

Dr. Tianmin Xu

Dr. Xu is a professor of orthodontics at the Peking University School of Stomatology and an adjunct professor of Case Western Reserve University.
He received his postgraduate education in orthodontics at Peking University School of Stomatology from 1988 to 1992 and was a Visiting Fellow in Orthodontics at the University of California San Francisco from 1994 to 1996. He serves as associate chief editors of OCR and Chinese Journal of Orthodontics, and also serves on EJO editorial board and AJODO editorial review board. His research interests focus on 4D orthodontics and the investigation of clinical orthodontic outcomes.

Dr. Franklin She is a private practitioner with an exclusive orthodontic practice that has been established for more than fifteen years.
He also teaches in his alma mater, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) as Part-time Clinical Lecturer in the Postgraduate Orthodontic program. He published a book chapter on 3D occlusogram and articles in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Journal of Dental Research, APOS trends in Orthodontics, Dental Asia and Hong Kong Medical Diaries. He was invited to lecture locally and internationally on the orthodontic camouflage of dentofacial deformities, and the applications of TADs and scientific biomechanics in cases involving other complex orthodontic problems. He is currently the Chairman of the Orthodontic Specialty Board of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong KongL.
